Wrapping up another fabulous year

Happy December to all. We hope you get a little time out to enjoy the wonderful weather.

Here at Suitcase we are reflecting on another mad dash year of fabulous theatre.

The year kicked off with a trip to Wanaka with the Rare Byrds (Dunedin Medieval Society), performing as puppeteers and “human extras” in the medieval puppet show “Lord Punch”.

Then we dove into a whirlwind variety show  “The best of us” fundraising for essential local service – Rape Crisis Dunedin.

Our “Mainstage” Productions this year were the dark and twisty winter tales – “The Night Shift” and “Crunchy Silk”. These were wonderfully received by audiences and we are really proud of the theatrical heights we were able to reach with the skill of the teams involved and loothe polish of both productions. These were also a fundraising / awareness raising event and we managed to raise some funds for the Dunedin Night Shelter as well as building a castle of loo paper.

Somewhere in the mix we spent some time with our friends at the Dunedin City Library doing a “Lines and Wines” reading of Waipiata. A local story by playwright and University of Otago Burns Fellow Emily Duncan.

Next we dove into another of the Rare Byrds fabulous puppet shows – The tale of tales. And finally another Rare Byrds extravaganza – “Murder in the Cathedral” by T.S.Eliot.MITC a4

Recently we met with the Dunedin Theatre Community to celebrate another great year at the Dunedin Theatre Awards. Suitcase was nominated for best community engagement and best Director and many of our team and “non-suitcase” projects were nominated in other categories across the awards. Two of our team were recognized for their outstanding performances this year. Our very own trustee Laura Wells and Cheyne Jenkinson (Marlo in Crunchy Silk). Well done team!70213155_3872201706139224_1021064157488742400_o

Behind the scenes the team have also been working away at the foundations of a production for Dunedin Fringe 2020. This is an exciting and innovative piece that has never before hit the stage. It will be directed by the fabulously talented Laura Wells

And of course I cant tell you what it is until the Fringe Program Launch ….. you’ll just have to wait and see 🙂

Happy holidays to all who have em. And hang in there to those that don’t.

Love and Hugs, the Suitcase team – Helen, Sofie & Laura
